Van Nuys-based Microfabrica, which micro-fabricates three dimensional micro-devices, said Thursday that the firm has raised $22.5M in a Series B funding. The round was co-led by Versant Venturs and Interwest Partners, and also included prior investors Draper Fisher Jurvetson, DynaFund Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures, and Partech International. The firm said the funding will go to expand its products and capabilities in the minimally invasive medical device area…. (more)

Irvine-based Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies, which develops powertrain and other energy-related technology, said Thursday that it has consolidated its two California operational facilities into a Lake Forest campus. The firm–which is behind the hybrid powertrain being used in plug-in hybrid car maker Fisker Automotive–said the new location gives it approximately 100,000 square feet, for its product development, engineering, advanced research, and other facilities…. Los Angeles-based Fonality, which develops open source PBX software and communications systems, said late Wednesday evening that it has raised $12M in a financing round. The round was led by Draper Fisher Jurvetson Growth Fund, and also included prior investor Intel Capital. Fonality said it will use the new capital to expand its market share. Randy Glein of DFJ Growth Fund has joined the firm’s board of directors along with the funding…. (more)

San Diego-based Qualcomm has hired on a new executive for the firm’s Qualcomm Enterprise Services division, the company said Tuesday. Qualcomm said that it has appointed Robert Walton as Senior Vice President and Division President of the unit. Walton has been at Qualcomm since May of 2007, and has also previously served at Compaq Computer, PIXAR Animation Studios, NeXT Computer and Northern Telecom Electronics (now Nortel Networks), among others…. Paige Kuni, worldwide manager of K-12 education for Intel Corporation, was elected board chair for The Partnership for 21st Century Skills for its 2008-2009 academic year. Kuni, whose Intel responsibilities include collaborating with educators and government leaders worldwide on programs to help students prepare and develop 21st century skills, said one of her primary goals will be to enhance the resources available to the nine partner states that have adopted the Partnership’s Framework for 21st Century Learning. Kuni is also intent on leading the national dialogue on the critical teaching and learning outcomes needed in a global society and marketplace.
