Carlsbad-based MaxLinear, a developer of RF analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, has filed for an IPO, saying in a filing today that it is looking to raise up to $100M in an IPO on either the Nasdaq Global Market or the New York Stock Exchange. The IPO is being underwritten by Morgan Stanley & Co. Incorporated, Deutsche Bank Securities Inc., UBS Securities LLC, Thomas Weisel Partners LLC and Needham & Company, LLC. MaxLinear makes radio frequency receivers used for decoding analog broadband signals, including set-top and cable boxes, digital televisions, mobile handsets, personal computers, and other electronic devices. According to the filing, the firm earned $2.4M on revenues of $36.1M in the nine months ending September 30th, and had a net loss of $1.9M on revenues of $31.3M in fiscal 2008. The firm is venture backed by U.S. Venture Partners, Battery Ventures, Misson Ventures, UMC Capital, and others.

Pasadena-based Energy Innovations, a developer of concentrating solar modules, has scored a win in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, the firm announced Friday morning. Energy Innovations said it has been awarded a contract to install its systems at Masdar City, a model community of 50,000 which is being developed as a sustainable, energy independent, carbon neutral city entirely powered by renewable energy. Financial terms and impact of the deal, and extent of the install in the city, was not disclosed by Energy Innovations. EI is venture backed by Idealab; MDV Mohr, Davidow Ventures; and Westlake Venture Partners.

San Diego-based personal radio startup Slacker has expanded its services to Android phones, the firm said this morning, in conjunction with the launch of Motorola’s DROID on Verizon. Slacker, which operates a personal Internet radio service which works with PCs, smart phones, and Slacker’s own devices, said the new application is free. Slacker said the application is listed on the Verizon channel of the Android Market on Motorola’s DROID, and also runs on other Android phones. Slacker’s software is already available for the BlackBerry and the iPhone.

Los Angeles-based Break Media, which operates a network of male-centric content web sites, said today that it has linked with home entertainment system company Yoostar in a promotion. According to Break,it is teaming up with Yoostar for a special, featured channel on the site focused on the “Yoostar Casting Tour” competition. Entrants into the competition use Yoostar’s system to insert themselves into a movie or television scene to act with or replace original actors, to win walk-on roles to a 2010 Lionsgate film and other prizes. The finalists from the event will be uploaded onto a contest site on Break.com, which will also film and include interviews, a special webisode, and other content. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Cypress-based Universal Electronics said today that it has appointed Carl Vogel to its board of directors. Vogel is a partner at SCP Worldwide, which owns the NHL’s St. Louis Blues and Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake. He also sits on the board of Shaw Communications, and previously was a board member at Dish Network. Universal Electronics is a developer of wireless accessories.

Santa Barbara-based Eucalpytus Systems, the venture funded startup developing open source, private cloud management software, said Thursday that it has released its first major update of its software. According to the firm, the updated software now includes multi-cluster support, better scaling, and new monitoring capabilities. Eucalpytus is venture backed by Benchmark Capital and BV Capital, and is a spinout of UC Santa Barbara.
