Aptera Delays Vehicle

Vista-based electric vehicle maker Aptera, on the heels of the departure of the firm’s co-founders, has officially pushed back deliver of the firm’s Aptera 2e vehicle, acknowledged the departure of co-founders Chris Anthony and Steve Fambro, and said it has laid of an unspecified number of staff. The firm said in a statement that the firm’s vehicle development has “outpaced the rate of fundraising” at the firm, and it is now adjusting its production schedule to “align with financing realities.” The firm said it will complete its first vehicle in 2010, not by the end of the year. In the statement, Aptera said it will begin volume production when it receives private funding or if it can secure financing through the Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicle loan program. Aptera is venture backed by Google and Idealab.

Calacanis: First Angels In New Angel Group

Jason Calacanis, CEO of Santa Monica-based Internet search site Mahalo, has signed on several angels for his new angel group, the Open Angel Forum - Los Angeles. Calacanis–who started the group as an outgrowth of his crusade against pay-to-pitch angel groups like The Keiretsu Forum–said in his blog today that he has signed up Matt Coffin, Sky Dayton, and Bill Woodward as members of his group. Coffin is the founder of LowerMyBills, Dayton is the founder of Earthlink, and Woodward is a venture capitalist at Anthem Venture Partners. Calacanis launched what he called a “jihad” against Keiretsu and others in early October, over their high fees and hidden costs for entrepreneurs looking to pitch the groups for money.

SoCal VC’s Scarce On Top VC List

This week’s release of a list of their “Top 100″ venture capitalists by AlwaysOn — based roughly on number and dollar amount of successful M&A and IPO deals between October 1, 2005 to September 30, 2009–seems to have skipped local Southern California venture capitalists, with only one Southern California VCs listed. According to the list, just Jim Gauer of Palomar Ventures, made the cut. AlwaysOn highlighted Gauer’s involvement in firms AlterPoint, Network Physics, RealOps, and Cerebra in the rankings. The list came as news that Forbes is dropping its “Midas List” rankings of top venture capitalists.
