San Diego-based Semtek Corporation, a developer of security technology used for protecting magnetic stripes on credit cards, has scored an investment from VeriFone Holdings, VeriFone said Wednesday. Amount of the investment was not disclosed. According to VeriFone, it was the lead in a Series B financing for Semtek, doubling its investment in Semtek and also acquiring an option at a future date to purchase the remaining shares in Semtek. The deal also includes a worldwide distribution agreement between the firm for licesing Semtek’s encryption technology to point-of-sale hardware vendors. Other investors in the round included Venrock Capital and RRE Ventures.

San Diego-based Astute Networks, a developer of rackmount, edge storage devices aimed at blade servers, has raised $3.6M in a new round of funding, according to a regulatory filing from the firm today. No details of the funding have yet been released by the firm. It appears, based on information in the filing, that the new funding round is a Series A-1, and includes Keynote Ventures, Sevin Rosen, and Tallwood Venture Capital. The filing indicates the firm has a target of $10M for the new funding round.

Irvine-based WebVisible has snagged former NetZero co-founder Ronald Burr as its Chief Operating Officer, the firm said Wednesday. The firm, which helps small businesses place local online advertising, said that Burr will oversee the firm’s product development, engineering, IT, media, and operations. Burr helped found NetZero, and was most recently Chief Product Officer at Los Angeles-based legal information and education firm LRN.
