Chip Shot: Back to School - Intel’s Kuni leads education advocacy organization

Paige Kuni, worldwide manager of K-12 education for Intel Corporation, was elected board chair for The Partnership for 21st Century Skills for its 2008-2009 academic year. Kuni, whose Intel responsibilities include collaborating with educators and government leaders worldwide on programs to help students prepare and develop 21st century skills, said one of her primary goals will be to enhance the resources available to the nine partner states that have adopted the Partnership’s Framework for 21st Century Learning. Kuni is also intent on leading the national dialogue on the critical teaching and learning outcomes needed in a global society and marketplace.

Aptera Hires CEO

Carlsbad-based Aptera, the electric car startup funded by Idealab and Google, said today that it has hired on a new President and CEO, Paul Wilbur. tinyMash, tinyCrunch Condense Blog Content

Los Angeles-based tinyComb, a new startup focused on condensing and delivering summarized versions of popular blog sites, said today that the firm has launched a new web site, tinyMash.com. The startup–headed by Mathew Glueckert and Jason Wilk–said that the new web site will deliver condensed news from popular Web 2.0 blog Mashable.com, along with other sites. Aqua Connect Adds Digital Insight’s Fiore To Board

Los Angeles-based Aqua Connect, a developer of Mac terminal emulation software, said Wednesday that it has named Digital Insight founder Paul Fiore to its board of directors. Fiore co-founded and served as President and CEO of Digital Insight, and took the company public in a 1999 IPO. Zag Bags NRA

Santa Monica-based Zag, which develops software to power online car buying services, has signed on the National Rifle Association as a customer, the firm announced today. Zag did not disclose the financial impact of the deal, but said that the NRA will use the firm for a new online car-buying program for its members. Zag’s software provides a full, online automotive configuration which delivers full pricing on autos–including all optional accessories and options…. (more)

Kotura Snags DARPA Contract

Monterey Park-based Kotura, which develops optoelectronic components, said this morning that it has inked a five year, $14M development contract with Sun Microsystems, as part of a DARPA contract. According to Kotura, the deal is part of a DARPA program, focused on supercomputing, the DARPA Ultraperformance Nanophotonic Intrachip Communications (UNIC) program. According to Kotura, the firm’s technology will be used as part of an on-chip network of low-cost, optical interconnects…. (more)

Big Stage Entertainment Opens Beta

Pasadena-based Big Stage Entertainment said today that it has debuted a beta version of its web site. The startup has developed software which uses digital photos to create a life-like, 3D avatar. The firm’s technology was developed at the University of Southern California. According to Big Stage, the firm will offer a free avatar creation service and online platform to create your own avatar, which can be exported in movie clips and still images…. (more)
