According to a report, Los Angeles-based Teleflip, which operates a service which connects your email to any SMS phone, has shut down its services. According to technology blog GigaOm, Teleflip sent an email to subscribers this week saying that the firm will close down services Friday. Teleflip was venture backed by GRP Partners, and had also received debt financing from Hercules Technology Growth Capital…. (more)

Pasadena-based Materia, a Caltech spinoff which develops chemical processing technology, has signed an agreement with the University of Calgary, in Calgary, Canada, for an exclusive license to chemical technology developed at the school. Financial terms of the license were not disclosed…. (more)

Newport Beach-based semiconductor firm Conexant Systems said Thursday that it has appointed D. Scott Mercer as Chairman of the firm’s board of directors, replacing existing chairman Dwight W. Decker. Decker continues on the firm’s board. Mercer is Conexant’s CEO, a position he’s held since April of this year. According to Conexant, Mercer is also on the board of directors of Palm, Polycom, SMART Modular Technologies, and Adaptec…. (more)

Los Angeles-based ThisNext said Thursday morning that it has promoted Scott Morrow to CEO of the firm. Morrow, who has been President of ThisNext since September of 2007, has also served at IAC/Citysearch and CNET. ThisNext co-founder and CEO Gordon Gould will become Executive Chairman of the company. According to ThisNext, Gould will continue to act as a public face for ThisNext, with Morrow leading day to day operations…. (more)

Irvine-based Ultimate Ears, a maker of in-ear monitors for professional musicians, has been acquired by electronics accessories maker Logitech, Logitech said Thursday. Logitech said it would pay $34M in cash for Ultimate Ears, which was founded in 1995. According to Logitech, Ultimate Ears employs nearly 40 people, and will allow the firm to expand its portfolio of digital audio products…. (more)

Costa Mesa-based Irvine Sensors said Wednesday that it has named John C. Carson, the firm’s CEO and a director of the firm, as its Chairman. Irvine Sensors said that Carson succeeds former chairman Dr. Mel Brashears, who has resigned due to a family medical emergency. Irvine Sensors develops miniaturized infrared and electro-optical cameras, image processors, and other optical systems.
