Gorilla Nation Adds More Ethnic Sites

Los Angeles-based Gorilla Nation announced Monday that it has added five new sites to the firm’s GNMulticultural vertical. The group, which focuses on multi-cultural marketing, has added three African-American, and two Hispanic web sites. The African-American sites are TheUrbanBlogger.com, SandraRose.com, and NecoleBitchie.com; the Hispanic sites are Canal internet and LatinGossip.com. Gorilla Nation will represent the online advertising inventory of all three sites. Financial impact of the deals were not disclosed.

Boingo Wireless Signs Irish Firm

Los Angeles-based Wi-Fi provider Boingo Wireless announced Monday that the firm has inked a deal with free-hotspot.com, a Dublin, Ireland-based provider of Wi-Fi access in Europe. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Boingo said that the deal provides Boingo customers with advertising-free access in 3,500 locations in 18 European countries. Boingo Wireless is a provider of wireless access services, through a network of partners. The firm said its customers now have access to more than 100,000 hotspots globally.

Venture Capital Investments Flat In Q2, SoCal Still Number Two

PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association released its quarterly venture capital survey over the weekend, showing that investments in the Southern California area were essentially flat quarter-to-quarter. According to the MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) based on data provided by Thomson Reuters, there was $950M in deals for the second quarter in the Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego areas, down slightly from Q1, when $988.8M was invested in the region. There were 102 venture deals in the region for the quarter, exactly the same tracked last quarter by the report…. (more)

Mindspeed Sells Patents

Newport Beach-based Mindspeed Technologies announced today that it has sold what it describes as “certain non-core patents” for $10M. Terms and buyers of the patents were not disclosed. Mindspeed said the patents came from a broad portfolio of patents which are no longer core to the firm’s business focus. Details on the types of patents sold and number of patents was not released by the company. Mindspeed said it has been generating revenue from patent sales in the last year, and expects to engage in additional “strategic, non-core” patent sale or licensing arrangements in the future.

ValueClick Launches Behavioral Targeting Product

Westlake Village-based ValueClick Media said this morning that it has launched a new, predictive behavioral targeting product for the online advertising market. According to ValueClick, the new product, the Precision BT suite, includes an enhanced version of its Precision Retargeting offering and Precision Profiles, a new predictive service for identifying prospects in consumer interest segments. The new offering uses a predictive algorithm to determine which consumers are most likely to click on an ad. ValueClic Media is a provider of display advertising and other Internet advertising and lead generation services.

Specific Media Hires Engineering VP

Irvine-based Specific Media said today that it has appointed Brian Burdick as Senior Vice President of Engineering at the firm. Specific Media operates an independent online advertising network which targets consumers based on demographic information. Specific Media said that Burdick joins the firm from Microsoft subsidiary AdECN, where he was Chief Technical Officer. According to Specific Media, Burdick was a founding member of Microsoft adCenter prior to his time at AdECN. Burdick will oversee engineering, product management, quality assurance, and technical operations at Specific Media.
