Virgin Mobile said Friday morning that it has signed an agreement to acquire Helio, the Los Angeles-based MVNO that is a joint venture of Earthlink and SK Telecom. According to Virgin Mobile, it will pay $39M for Helio. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of the year. Virgin Mobile said the deal is expected to give it entry into the postpaid mobile phone market, and approximately 170,000 existing subscribers. Virgin Mobile said Helio also had an inventory of around 80,000 handsets, worth approximately $17M in book value…. (more)

Aliso Viejo-based 3Tera, a provider of cloud computing services, said this week that it has added support for MySQL replication to its catalog of systems. According to the firm, its MySQL-R appliance provides database replication for MySQL, a popular open source database. 3Tera is a provider of cloud computing and utility computing services which allows companies to create and deploy servers from their web browser.

Calabasas-based wireless mesh networking hardware provider Strix Systems has signed a deal to provide its hardware for a use in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the firm said earlier this week. Financial impact of the win was not announced, but Strix said that its outdoor wireless networking system has been integrated into emergency response vehicles and other personal mobile communications for public safety. Strix said the win was a part of a design by Silicon-Star Science & Technology Development Co. Ltd and Beijing Aerospace Changfeng Co., Ltd, which will be used in the Olympic Stadium and downtown Beijing during the Olympic Games.

The device weighs 320g, has a 4.8-inch screen and includes WiFi, CDA, 3G and Bluetooth capabilities. With support of China Telecom, Redflag, Taobao, Sina and Tencent, the MID bundles stock updates, mobile TV, email, Internet browsing, GPS, gaming, music, IM and translation capabilities.

A study just published by The Climate Group reports that while the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry will soon account for 2% of the world’s global carbon emissions – it actually will help all other industries reduce it’s own emissions by as much as 15% — 5x it’s own carbon footprint.
