Santa Ana-based MSC.Software, a developer of software for the CAD/CAM simulation market, said Tuesday that it has acquired MacNeal Group, a provider of simulation software for systems design. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The MacNeal Group develops computer aided engineering (CAE) software for simulating parts designs. MacNeal’s software is based on NASTRAN, a finite element analysis software package which MSC.Software developed for NASA in the 1960’s to simulate CAD designs.

Today at Cisco Live! 2008, Intel showed off its new low-power, halogen-free Ethernet controller and its three corresponding server adapters. These products are designed for multi-core and virtualized server environments. In addition to the products’ increased security capabilities, they’re the first Ethernet solutions to implement the recently completed PCI-SIG I/O Virtualization specifications. These new products improve virtualization, data protection, and overall system performance. Calabasas-based Digital Insight, the digital banking firm owned by Intuit, said yesterday that the firm has signed a strategic relationship with the Credit Union National Association Strategic Services (CUNA Strategic Services). According to the company, CSS has named Digital Insight as its preferred provider of online banking products and services. Financial and other details on the strategic relationship were not disclosed. Digital Insight is a provider of online bill payment and online Internet banking services for credit unions and mid-market banks; the firm was acquired in February of last year by Intuit.

San Diego-based Nirvanix said yesterday that it has inked a strategic partnership with content deliver network (CDN) firm CDNetworks. According to Nirvanix, which provides online storage-as-a-service, CDNetworks’ customers will be able to store unlimited content on the Nirvanix service. Financial details of the arrangement were not announced. CDNetworks is a provider of content deliver network services for online video and data files. Nirvanix is a provider of online storage, available programmatically through an application programming interface; the firm competes head to head with Amazon’s S3 storage services…. (more)

Santa Ana-based Advanced Medical Optics said Tuesday that it has entered into a patent cross-licensing agreement with Alcon. According to the firms, Alcon will pay AMO $31M, and AMO will pay Alcon $10M in the deal. The patent covers technology for lubricious intraocular lens (IOL) inserters and one-piece IOL haptic designs. AMO is a developer of ocular surgery products and devices, as well as laser vision correction systems. AMO said it expects to receive the $21M proceeds in the second quarter of this year.

Carlsbad-based Aptera Motors, the Idealab-backed hybrid-electric vehicle maker, said today that it has hired on Tony Kirton as its new Chief Marketing Officer. Aptera said that Kirton joins the firm after serving as an independent marketing and brand consultant; he has previously served at Audi of America, Volkswagen & Audi, and Chief Marketing Officer of BMW’s South African marketing and manufacturing subsidiary.
