Teledyne Ups Stake In Ocean Design

Thousand Oaks-based Teledyne Technologies said Friday that it has increased its ownership stake in Ocean Design, a manufacturer of subsea fiber optic interconnects. Teledyne Technologies said it paid $35M for 21 percent of ODI at the end of May, which is an addition to the majority stake it purchased of the firm in August of 2006 for $30M. Teledyne said it now has a total ownership interest of 84 percent of Ocean Design, whose products are used for offshore oil and gas production, oceanographic research, and military applications. Teledyne Technologies is a developer of electronics, instrumentation, communications, and other products for a wide variety of industries.

Ceradyne Buys Patent

Costa Mesa-based Ceradyne said today that it has acquired certain patents and intellectual property from an unnamed Rhode Island firm, in a deal worth $4M. The patents and IP cover ceramic bearing technology for “down hole” oil drilling. According to Ceradyne, the IP will be used to bring a silicon carbide-based bearing for oil drilling to market. The deal also includes a royalty worth 3% of net sales on the bearings over the life of the patents. Ceradyne is a developer of ceramic products used for the defense, industrial, automotive, and other applications.

OleOle Launches Features For EURO 2008

Beverly Hills-based OleOle, the new startup headed by former RazorGator founder Doug Knittle, has launched a new interactive blogging site focused on EURO 2008 in Austria and Switzerland. OleOle, which is developing a user-driven, social media site for soccer fans, said that its new interactive MatchCentre will allow fans to get pre-game commentary, squad details, real time play-by-play stats, live blogging, and other information about matches and games. OleOle also said that Arseblog, the European football blog it recently acquired, will create daily podcasts based on fan calls and reports from EURO 2008 matches. OleOle is a multi-lingual site focused on football fans.

SpaceX In Deal With NASA For Software QA

Hawthorne-based SpaceX, the company which is developing commercial space vehicles, said Thursday that it has signed an agreement with NASA in a collaboration over mission- and safety-critical software for SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. According to SpaceX, it will fund an effort by NASA’s Independent Verification & Validation (IV&V) Facility at Fairmont, West Virginia to provide full analysis of SpaceX’s system software. SpaceX–which is funded by PayPal founder Elon Musk–is developing launch vehicles for carrying private payloads to space. The firm has a contract with NASA to provide Commercial Orbital Transportation Services for docking with the International Space Station.

CalAmp Expands Board

Oxnard-based CalAmp, a provider of wireless communications products, said earlier this week that it has added two new independent directors to its board. CalAmp said that Kimberly E. Alexy and Larry J. Wolfe have joined the company, while current director Arthur H. Hausman will be retiring. Alexy is at private investment management firm Alexy Capital Management, and also has served at Prudential Securities and Lehman Brothers; she is also on the board of Dot Hill Systems. Wolfe is the CEO of Taxcient, was previously a SVP at Intuit, among other experience; he also was on the board of QAD.

Entriq Gets Win

Carlsbad-based Entriq announced earlier this week that the firm’s services have been deployed by Inergize Digital Media, a provider of digital content management tools. Financial terms and impact of the deal were not disclosed. Entriq said that IDM is using its Media Services product to help manage web content management for over 50 television broadcasters. Entriq said the combined solution is in operation in 37 markets with Newport Television and other major network affiliates. Entriq develops software used by content providers and broadcasters to manage their digital media; the firm is a division of MIH, itself a subsidiary of Naspers Limited.

Leap Wireless Names Accounting Head

San Diego-based Leap Wireless International, a provider of wireless communications services, said this week that it has named Jeff Nachbor as the firm’s Chief Accounting Officer. Nachbor has been at the company since April, serving as the company’s SVP of Financial Operations; he has previously served at H&R Block, Sharper Image, Staples, and Victoria’s Secret Direct. Nachbor replaces Steven Martin, who was acting Chief Accounting Officer for the firm; Martin will transition to another, unspecified role within Leap.
