Intel Capital, Intel’s global investment arm is investing approximately US$15 million in Green Packet Berhad to kick-start Malaysia’s first mobile WiMAX network. The network, targeted to be available beginning in June from Green Packet subsidiary Packet One Networks, will be the first large-scale commercial deployment of mobile WiMAX in Southeast Asia, and the first large-scale deployment of 802.16e WiMAX in the 2.3GHz band outside Korea. Irvine-based Skweezer, a provider of mobile advertising and mobile web conversion software, said Monday that it has inked a partnership with Smaato, a provider of mobile advertising technology. Skweezer said it will begin distributing new mobile banner advertising feeds, including banner-based, cost-per-impression (CPM) ads, to its publishers from Smaato, which is an angel-back, Bay area startup. The firm said the deal is limited to distribution initially into Skweezer’s Indian market, and will be limited to 200 million requests per month, until they firms have “throughly appraised and validated” the feed.

Through Cable Cares, the umbrella charity program supporting the re-vitalization of New Orleans during the Cable Show 2008, Intel donated nearly 50 Dell Desktop PCs and Monitors to Laurel Elementary school. Intel volunteers were on hand over the weekend at the local school to help unbox and install the new PCs that students will use to conduct research and complete class projects. Intel Chairman Craig Barrett is on the road in Asia. In Jakarta he announced the scaling of teacher training and one on one (1:1) computing programs for Indonesian schools. In Penang, location of Intel’s largest assembly & test site and home to approximately 10% of its workforce, he stood alongside Malaysia’s Ministry of Education and announced that 1:1 e-learning is being scaled to three entire schools. Now in Kuala Lumpur, he will keynote WCIT 2008. Two years on from announcing World Ahead, he will review progress to date - and issue a call to action for governments to take the lead in driving next-steps.
