NeuroVigil Lands $250K From DFJ

La Jolla-based NeuroVigil, a spinout of the Salk Institute, has scored a seed funding round of $250,000 from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, DFJ Frontier, and Zone Ventures. Draper Fisher Jurvetson announced the investment Friday, saying that the startup gained the funding after winning its annual business plan competition, the DFJ Venture Challenge. NeuroVigil is using brain analysis to treat sleep disorders such as sleep apnea; the firm was founded by Dr. Philip Low, a graduate student at The Salk Insitute. According to DFJ, the company won in a competition that included 16 teams from 12 universities; City Media, a startup out of UCLA, also made the finalist list.

AeroVironment Gets UAV Win In The Netherlands

Monrovia, California-based AeroVironment said Friday that the firm has been awarded a contract for its Raven unmanned aircraft systems by The Netherlands Ministry of Defence. According to AeroVironment, the contract is worth $7.7M. AeroVironment’s Raven RQ-11B is an unmanned aircraft used by the defense and military; the UAV is currently used by the U.S. armed forces and others for reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition. The company said the deal includes new aircraft systems, training, logistics support, and airworthiness certification. AeroVironment develops unmanned aircraft systems and energy products.

Peerless Systems Aborts Prism Software Buy

El Segundo-based Peerless Systems Corporation said Friday that it has terminated its asset purchase agreement with Prism Software Corporation. According to Peerless, it said that some of the conditions to close the transaction with Prism were not satisfied, and it determined it was in the company’s best interest to pursue other opportunities. Peerless had announced that it would buy Prism Software, a developer of document management software, in February. That move followed the sale of what the firm termed as “substantially all of its intellectual property” to Kyocera Mita Corporation.

IN-FUSIO Grabs “Get Smart” Rights

Los Angeles-based IN-FUSIO, a developer of mobile games and content, said Thursday that it has licensed the mobile gaming rights to Warner Bros.’ upcoming motion picture, Get Smart. Financial details of the license were not announced. IN-FUSIO said it would develop a mobile game based on the motion picture from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, which will combine puzzle solving, combat, and mission-based gameplay. The deal also includes movie content, wallpapers, theme music, and ring tones.

Skweezer Targets Google AdSense With Upgrade

Irvine-based Skweezer, a provider of a mobile advertising network and service for converting web sites to mobile format, said Thursday that it has upgraded its online advertising system, with an eye on Google’s dominant AdSense advertising program. According to the firm, its upgrade now works for both desktop and mobile ads, and supports ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, or JavaScript code. The company said that its ad system automatically adjusts and reformats ads based on the visitor’s device type, and also can reformat and compress web content for viewing on mobile devices.

EdenIQ Raises Venture Round

Encino-based EdenIQ, which is developing cellulosic ethanol technology for the clean energy sector, has quietly raised a round of venture capital as part of the firm’s spinoff from Altra Biofuels. According to EdenIQ’s web site, current investors in the firm include Draper Fisher Jurvetson, DFJ Element, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Angelno Group, Omninet, The Westly Group, Duff Ackerman & Goodrich, and Northgate Capital. Altra Biofuels said earlier this month that the firm had spun out EdenIQ, and will own 30% of EdenIQ, but did not disclosed details of the venture funding…. (more)

Kintera Acquired By Blackbaud

San Diego-based Kintera, the provider of online software for managing nonprofit operations, said Thursday afternoon that the firm has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Blackbaud, Inc. The deal is worth approximately $46.0 million. According to Kintera, it will continue its operations in San Diego and its other locations. Blackbaud will pay $1.12 per share for Kintera, which is publicly traded on the NASDAQ as KNTA. Blackbaud is a provider of software and services for nonprofits, and is based in Charleston, SC.

Newegg Expands Beyond Electronics, Computers

City of Industry-based Newegg, the online retailer of consumer electronics and computer products, said this week that the firm has expanded into general merchandise with a new site, NeweggMall.com. The retailer said it would offer everything from auto parts and hardware to jewelry, apparel, and home and garden products. NewEgg said it would apply what it learned within the information technology and consumer electronics market to the mass merchandise market. NewEgg’s new site allows third party sellers, who are offering and shipping a significant number of the products from the new site.
