Interview with Bryan Biniak, Jacked

As the NCAA’s March Madness basketball tournament goes into its second week, we though it would be interesting to talk to Jacked (www.jacked.com), a Los Angeles company which has created a sports focused, informational “second screen” that provides real-time information on sports events. The firm has recently inked notable deals with KCAL 9 and Carl’s Jr. to provide information for the Lakers, and also has a number of other partnerships with local broadcasters, sports teams, and others to provide their information services across a number of web sites. Trius Therapeutics Raises $30M

San Diego-based Trius Therapeutics said today that it has raised $30M in a Series B funding round. The funding was led by Kleiner, Perkins, Caulfied and Byers. FinTech Global Capital, a new investor in the firm, also participated, along with existing backers Sofinnova Ventures, Versant Ventures, Interwest Partners and Prism VentureWorks. Trius Therapeutics is developing antibacterial drugs.

Zogenix Files For IPO

San Diego-based Zogenix said late last Thursday in a filing with the SEC that it is looking to raise up to $86.25M in an IPO on the Nasdaq Global Market. The firm said it has applied to list as “ZGNX.” The IPO is being underwritten by Banc of America Securities, Leerink Swann, Thomas Weisel Partners, and Susquehanna Financial Group. Zogenix develops pharmaceuticals for the treatment of pain and central nervous system disorders; the firm’s lead product is an treatment for actue migraines. Zogenix is backed by Domain Associates, Clarus Lifesciences, Scale Venture Partners, Thomas McNerney & Partners, Abingworth Bioventures, and others.

Wyle Sells Test Operations

El Segundo-based Wyle said Friday that it has sold its Santa Clara test operations to Silicon Turnkey Solutions, a Milpitas-based provider of test and qualifications services. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Wyle is a provider of aerospace engineering and IT services to the federal government. The firm’s Santa Clara test operations served the aerospace, military, and commercial electronics industry.
