Clean Technology Investments Jump To $3B Globally

Dow Jones VentureSource released numbers Friday showing that venture capitalists invested $3B in 221 clean technology deals worldwide in 2007. The report found that the number of dollars invested was a 43 percent increase over last year, where there was $2.1B and 173 deals. According to Dow Jones, the amount of investment matched the size of investments in the entire business/consumer/retail industry, representing 8 perecent of the total U.S. venture capital investment in 2007. California garnered $1.3B of the total investments in the clean technology sector, representing 66 of the deals covered by the report.

Digital Map Products In Deal With LoopNet

Santa Ana-based Digital Map Products, a firm which provides GIS mapping technology for web applications, said Thursday taht it has been selected by online commercial real estate marketplace firm LoopNet. LoopNet will use Digital Map Products ParcelStream web service, to show properly boundary line information on the real estate website. Financial details of the win were not discussed. Digital Map Products, which is venture backed by the Keiretsu Forum and TVC Ventures, develops GIS products used by governments and others for analyzing land usage, and for displaying online maps.

DTS Teams With Motherboard Manufacturer

Agoura Hills-based DTS, which provides digital audio technology used for decoding of surround sound, said Friday that the firm is in a strategic agreement with motherboard manufacturer FOXCONN. According to DTS, FOXCONN will integrate its DTS Connect and DTS Surround Sensation into its upcoming motherboards. DTS CONNECT is a surround sound decoding technology for PCs; DTS Surround Sensation is a acoustic post-processing technology to create “three dimensional” sound from only two speakers. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Chip Shot: Sun Posts New Xeon Server-based Benchmark Record

A Sun Fire X4150 Server powered by the Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor X5460 delivered a world record industry SPECjbb2005 benchmark result using the new and optimized Sun JVM and Solaris operating system with a score of 303,297 BOPS. Since the Intel-Sun announcement more than a year ago (January 2007), Sun and Intel server performance has dramatically increased due to joint optimization efforts. The older Sun JVM on the same platform measured 193,209 BOPS meaning that the newer software is showing an improvement of 1.57x (57%) within a short time. More details here.

California Stem Cell Gets Funding

Irvine-based California Stem Cells said Friday morning that the firm has secured a Series A financing round, from undisclosed private investors. Amount of the investment was not disclosed. The firm said that it will use the funding to expand its laboratory and manfacturing facilities. California Stem Cells said it is focused on the manufacturing of high-purity human stem cells, for use in pre-clinical development of treatments for cardiac and central nervous system disorders.

Technology Council Names Technology Award Winners

The Technology Council of Southern California announced the winners of the group’s annual Technology Industry Awards last night at an event at the Millenium Biltmore in Los Angeles. The group recognized George Klaus of Epicor Software with a Lifetime Achievement Award; Jim McCluney of Emulex as CEO of the Year; Tim Vanderhook of Specific Media as Entrepreneur of the Year; Citrix Online as Software of the Year, and QLogic Corp. as Hardware & Storage Company of the Year. Other award recipients included 8e6 Technologies for Network & Security Company of the Year; HireRight for Internet & New Media Company of the Year; K2 Network for Entertainment & Gaming; and Networks In Motion for Mobile & Communications Company. Alelo, a USC spinoff which develops game-based training software for training troops in Iraqi language and culture, received the Product of the Year award. Tony Perkins of AlwaysOn was the keynote speaker.

ABC Launches Short Form Programming Group

Disney-ABC Television Group said Thursday that it has launched a new group focused on original, short form programming. The new group, Stage 9 Digital Media, is launching with a new web comedy series, “Squeegees,” which is being shown on ABC.com and YouTube. According to Disney-ABC Television, the series will be sponsored by Toyota. The new Stage 9 unit will be headed by Barry Jossen. According to ABC, the studio has a slate of more than 20 programs in production, including comedy, drama, animation and reality titles. The new short form programming unit will distribute its programming through video sites, online social networks, mobile, and other download services.

Aspyra Appoints Zierick CEO

Calabasas-based Aspyra, a provider of clinical and diagnostic information software for the healthcare industry, said Thursday that it has hired Jim Zierick as the firm’s interim CEO. Zierick joins the firm from LogicalApps, where he was also CEO. Zierick also previously served at Peregrine Systems. Zierick has been on the company’s board of directors since September of 2007. Current interim CEO James R. Helms returns to his role as Chief Operations Officer at the firm. Asprya is a developer of clincial information systems for the healthcare industry.
