Pasadena-based, grid-scale, utility solar systems developer eSolar has received $10M in funding from Google, Google.org confirmed Thursday as part of the launch of several new initiatives at the search engine giant’s nonprofit arm. Google said Thursday that it has launched three new initiatives Thursday, targeted at identifying hot spots and enable rapid response to emerging threats such as pandemics and global warming; supporting the growth of small and medium sized businesses in the developing world; and improving public services in Sub Saharan Africa and India. Google had announced it was working with eSolar — which is backed by Idealab, and chaired by Bill Gross — in November. At that time, Google did not announce the amount of its investment in the company.

ManiaTV, the online content provider behind such shows as Tom Green Live and Dave Navarro’s Spread Entertainment, said Thursday that it is relocating its headquarters and content operations to Los Angeles. The firm, which was based in Denver, Colorado, runs an Internet television network focused on pop culture, music, comedy, and other professionaly produced content. The firm said that it will relocate to Carthay Studios, which is located on Pico Blvd. Peter Hoskins, the firm’s CEO, said in a statement that “Moving to LA is part of a growth strategy that will allow us to work more closely with leaders in the entertainment industry.” Mania TV is venture backed by Benchmark Capital, Centennial Ventures, and Intel Capital.

Camarillo-based Transonic Combustion, a firm which is developing an advanced fuel injection system for automobiles, said Thursday that it has received an additional investment from Khosla Ventures. The firm said the third round of funding makes Khosla the largest shareholder in the firm. Vinod Khosla has joined the firm’s board as part of the funding. Transonic Combustion did not disclose financial details of the funding, but said it received a “substantially higher” valuation than the firm’s July 2007 second round. Transonic Combustion did not say if Rustic Canyon or Venrock, the firm’s other venture backers, participated in this round. Transonic Combustion’s technology is expected to increase fuel efficiency in automobiles, while also allowing for use of gasoline, diesel, and bio-renewable fuels.

San Diego-based DivX said Wednesday that it has inked a licensing agreement with AMD. According to DivX, AMD will include its codec technology in certain AMD Xilleon processors for digital TVs. DivX develops video encoding and decoding technology which it licenses to consumer electronics manufacturers and software developers. Financial impact of the deal was not disclosed. AMD’s Xilleon processors are being specifically marketed and designed for digital television manufacturers; the MIPs-based processors are used to power video and audio decoding, graphics and other digital TV and home gateway functions.
